Close to us
We realise that although our world happily revolves around diving and the underwater world, you might like a little more out of your visit. As such, we’ve summarised below some area’s close by you may be interested in visiting.
Il Mercato Promenade
A 10 minute walk from the dive centre, Il Mercato contains a variety of restaurants ranging from freshly caught seafood, Italian, Chinese and even a MacDonalds and KFC if that’s more your taste. You’ll find a few bars selling local and imported alcoholic drinks, or there are a number of coffee shops and even a Starbucks for a cooling Frappuccino.
Typical local stalls are dotted around the area but there are also electronic shops for camera batteries and chargers, designer clothes shops and pharmacies. Cash machines and foreign exchange machines are located close to one of the entrances, as are public toilets. The main point when visiting Il Mercato is that there is very little hassle from shop keepers or restaurant workers, so you can enjoy a nice meal and walk without having to say ‘shokran’ every couple of minutes.
A 15 minute walk from the dive centre will bring you to the more traditional part of Sharm el Shekh, known as Old Market. Many tour operators offer organised trips to the old market but it’s easier, and can work out cheaper to visit the area yourself. Be prepared to haggle however! The area has an abundance of similar shops, selling everything from imitation leather goods, holiday souvenirs including shisha pipes, magnets, pashmina and jewellery boxes, and handmade recycled glass lamps or kids lamps made from coconut shells.
This is a great area to walk around and absorb a little of the Egyptian spirit but don’t expect to stop for a beer as alcohol isn’t served in most of the cafes here, try a Turkish coffee instead, they are truly delicious! Old market has a number of delicious and cheap restaurants, if you like traditional Egyptian cuisine pay a visit to Al Masrien for a mixed grill kebab, warm pitta bread and tahini dip!
The most developed and busiest tourist area in Sharm el Sheikh sits in the centre of Sharm, approximately 10 minute taxi ride from the dive centre and offers something for everyone. A mixture of cafes, bars, restaurants, bowling alley, night clubs and shops, most people venture it to this area early evening onwards as it can be too hot and a little quiet during the day. If you’re looking for a nice meal, drinks and a dance there’s Hard Rock Café which offers 2-for-1 entry and drinks on certain days of the week; or pay a visit to Little Buddha who have a fantastic Sushi menu…the options are endless really.
Still expect to haggle on prices in shops in this area, except the dive shops where prices are pretty much consistent throughout the whole Sharm el Sheikh area. A recent addition to Na’ama Bay is the Genena City shopping Mall, the largest indoor shopping mall in Sharm, once fully complete it will boast a number of designer outlets, food courts, cinema and kids zone.
